The historical events I’m referencing, refers to two separate locations, in Shelby County, Alabama. More specifically, Allen Cemetery and Fungo Hollow.

Each specific reference pays tribute to recorded historical facts of the Cahaba Valley area. as well as a specific reference and acknowledgement to its settlers and inhabitants, their way of life, as well as the acknowledgment and recognition of their patriotic (Military) contributions to the United States of America and the wars they served in.

The first being the placement of a historical marker for the obscure Allen Cemetery. Allen Cemetery is located along Indian Springs road, in Shelby County, Alabama. Until recently, Allen Cemetery was a little known final resting place for a myriad Cahaba Valley settlers and its inhabitants, including many of my immediate family members and relatives. The cemetery is a quaint; well kept, property-nestled among the oaks and towering pines at the base of Oak Mountain. A gentle breeze can be felt year round providing a nostalgic but peaceful characteristic to its inhabitants final resting place, as well as the visitors to the location.

Oak Mountain and Double Oak Mountain are nearby and are part of the rugged Appalachian Mountains range. Recently, a Historical Marker appeared at the front entrance to Allen Cemetery. I discovered the marker while on a visit to the cemetery to pay my respects to my relatives buried there. More specifically, the marker was placed in 2026 by the Oak Mountain Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the America Revolution. The marker reads:

“HISTORIC ALLEN CEMETERY”. This cemetery was established in 1835 by Issac M Johnson, son of Revolutionary War Patriot Moses Johnson, upon the death of his wife and two sons, who are said to have died of yellow fever.
Isaac (1780-1867) served in the war of 1812. He purchased land and settled his family in the Cahaba Valley region of Shelby County, Alabama. He and his first wife Frances (Massey) Johnson had twelve children - eight sons and four daughters. Their daughter; Virginia Caroline, married John Allen who inherited the property and cemetery after Isaac’s death. Originally known as the Johnson Cemetery, it later came to be known as the Allen Cemetery. It is the resting place of numerous Johnson descendants, as well as descendants of other Cahaba Valley settlers.

The cemetery holds the graves of veterans from multiple wars throughout American history, including, the War of 1812, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.”

The second historical event is the placement of a historical marker in Fungo Hollow, Alabama which is also located in Shelby County, Alabama; along Hwy 33, and is part of the Cahaba Valley region. Fungo Hollow is a very special place to me because it’s where I spent my early childhood growing up. My grandmother; Jeanette Dennis Johnson, and my grandfather Carl Edward “Papa” Jonson’s homestead was located opposite of the entrance to the Oak Mountain State Park.

My uncle; General Pettis Dennis, a U.S. Army Veteran and Aunt Luvene along with their children were our neighbor on one side and my uncle Horace Dennis; a World War II Veteran, and Aunt Mary and their children were our neighbor on the on the other side.

Back in the 1950’s and 1960’s Fungo Hollow was principally a farming community. It was also a very poor community. When I was born, the United States was just five years out of World War II and the economy was in very poor condition, employment opportunities were limited and wages were low. Alabama was also a very poor state, which compounded the problems for families living in the state.

Outside of the agriculture business, other employment opportunities included working in the coal mines, the steel mill in Birmingham, the cotton gin, or driving an 18 wheel semi-truck. However, during this time period, there was one other opportunity many capitalized on to make money in Fungo Hollow in-order to feed the family and pay the bills, i.e., operating a whiskey still and making bootlegged whiskey (moon shine).

In fact, I had relatives who engaged in the bootlegging (moonshine) business. It was just a way of life, in Fungo Hollow, during this era, to make extra money to survive. Perhaps one of the most fascinating and hilarious items of this article is the placement of a 2026 plaque in Fungo Hollow acknowledging and paying tribute to this illicit; but common, trade. The plaque reads:

Home Town Heritage plaque by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation in 2026 dedicated to: FUNGO HOLLOW, AS EARLY AS 1923 THIS AREA WAS KNOWN FOR ITS MOONSHINE PRODUCTION, WHISKEY STILLS, AND BOOTLEGGING OPERATIONS DURING THE PROHIBITION ERA.

During my recent visit to Alabama, I stood at the location of the old homestead; long since removed by a buyer, closed my eyes and made a mental trip down memory lane.

I remembered: Sunny summer days, with the wind creating a magical enchanted melody as it flowed among the pines on Oak Mountain, swimming in Uncle Pet’s pond and the cold lake on Oak Mountain, catching fire flies at night with a mason jar with my cousins, climbing young pines on Oak Mountain and riding them down to the carpeted pine needle floor, building mountain sliding sleds with my cousins; slicking the bottoms with bees wax, for speed, and sliding down Oak Mountain on a slick carpet of pine needles like a Nascar racer.

I also remembered: The changing seasons; Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer. There was always a frost on the ground by Halloween and in some years it snowed, hunting trips in the winter; with my father, grandmother, uncles and cousins, fishing in the spring, and hard work in the summer. Maintaining a garden, feeding chickens and livestock, and hunting game animals for sustenance is hard work and requires the participation of every household family member.

Reward: Even though I grew up poor, in a two room house, with no running water, no indoor toilet facilities, a wood burning stove to cook with, a pot bellied stove to heat the house with in winter, water being drawn from an outside well and most of the lighting at night being supplied by kerosene lamps; this hard lifestyle made me the man that I am today. This early environment taught me to survive, the hard work put me on the path to success in life and I’ll never forget my roots or where I came from.

I’ll always refer to Alabama as my home and one day it’ll be my final resting place. Until then, I have a lifetime of memories to remember and share. At night I can close my eyes and remember chasing Raccoon's on Oak Mountain with my blue tick hound “Handy Andy’s” baritone howl reverberating off the mountains and valleys surrounding Fungo Hollow signifying the hunt is on.

“Until Next Time, Keep Em Between The Bridle!

Kathrin Darlene Bolton’s Losing Streak Continues

https://www.richardedennis.net/blog/kathrine-darlene-boltons-losing-streak-continues

https://www.richardedennis.net/blog/kathrine-darlene-boltons-losing-streak-continues#comments

Uncategorized

KATHRIN DARLENE BOLTON’S LOSING STREAK CONTINUESBy Richard E. “Rick” Dennis CPPRisk Manager & AnalystCertified Protection ProfessionalSeptember 12, 2026Copyright 2026; All Rights ReservedJUDGE DENIES MOTION FOR A NEW TRIAL, et.al.History: After two days of testimony on July 30 & 31, 2026, Judge Lett handed down a final judgement; finding Bolton liable for Negligence, Conversion, (theft of property) and Fraud. The judge awarded Valerie Hatfield one hundred and eighteen thousand dollars ($118,000.00) in damages against Bolton.

Kathrin Darlene Bolton, previously sued Hatfield for an array of alleged offenses including four claims: Breach-of-Contract, Injurious Falsehood, Slander, and Defamation. Bolton dropped most of the allegations during trial; leaving the Breach-of-Contract in place.

Valerie Hatfield counter sued Kathrin Darlene Bolton for: Negligence (carelessness), conversion (taking or interfering with someone else’s property) and Fraud ( deception). Judge Lett ruled: Bolton’s claims were denied, Hatfield didn’t breach a contract, and issued Hatfield the above damage award judgement against Bolton.

On August 19, 2026 Kathrin Darlene Bolton; aka Kathrin Black, Ashford, Huffine, Hufford, Bolton and AKA Layla Frost and Heather Rouh filed a Pro Se motion in the previously adjudicated case Kathrin Bolton V Valerie Hatfield, Case Number: (24J0-CC00032), in the circuit court of Johnson County, Missouri, Judge Stacey J. Attendees were: Kathrin Bolton aka Kathrin Black, Ashford, Huffine and Hufford (Plaintiff) and Valerie Hatfield (Defendant). Witnesses for the defense were Richard E. “Rick” Dennis CPP; owner, Wind River Company LLC, Risk Manager & Analyst, Metairie, Louisiana (Expert Witness), Kenny Parish; Arkansas and Mary Ivanoff; Wyoming.

The (Plaintiff) sued the (Defendant), i.e., Bolton sued Hatfield for defamation and slander. Hatfield counter sued for fraud, negligence and conversion of horses. At the conclusion of the trial, the court denied Bolton’s claims against Hatfield; while Hatfield was awarded: A court ordered judgement against Bolton in the amount of $114,000.00 plus reasonable attorney fees and court costs.

The witnesses testified as follows:

Kathrin Bolton represented by counsel, testified to (Plaintiff’s) lawsuit.
Valerie Hatfield represented by counsel, testified to (Defendant’s) counter - lawsuit.

Kenny Parish: Mr. Parish testified first, under oath, for the (Defense). More specifically: Parish testified about a group of horses being dumped in an unsustainable living environment in Alread, Arkansas. After videos and photographs were viewed, by Valerie Hatfield, of the abandoned horses, Hatfield identified three of the horses as belonging to Hatfield (Defendant). Upon Parish returning to Alread to verify the horses were still at the Alread location, Parish discovered the horses were missing. A few weeks later, Parish obtained new information the horses were abandoned less than fifty miles South, of the original location, and were not located at a livestock location.

Parish met Hatfield the next day at the livestock location at 7:00 am, accompanied by a known certified Veterinarian who is also the local representative for the Arkansas Poultry & Livestock Commission. After inspection, veterinarian care, and obtaining coggins tests were the horses were loaded up and transported to an undisclosed location for emergency care. After seventy five (75) days, the horses were returned to Hatfield. Parish also testified to the emaciated, deplorable and horrific condition the horses were in at the time of discovery. More specifically: Oswald, Osheana and Meango.

Mary Ivanoff: Mrs. Ivanoff testified second, under oath, for the (Defense). More specifically: Ivanoff testified she donated $15,000,00 and another $5,000.00 for a total of $20,000.00 to an alleged 501 C 3 nonprofit owned by Bolton; SUNRAY EQUINE TRAINING SANCTUARY (SETS). Ivanoff further testified: After, conducting a personal investigation; including guidestar.org, the premier destination for nonprofit research, Ivanoff discovered: Bolton was actively promoting and soliciting public donations for a fraudulent, nonexistent and an unverifiable 501 C 3. Ivanoff further testified: Bolton’s alleged nonprofit is completely fraudulent in every legal respect.

Ivanoff’s investigation also revealed: guidestar.org didn’t have an IRS tax form 990 filing for (SETS), on file, which is required by Federal 501 C 3 nonprofit reporting and tax filing law. Moreover, Ivanoff testified she was in possession of receipts, from Bolton, signifying Bolton received Ivanoff’s money donations for Bolton’s alleged 501 C 3 nonprofit; (SETS) and Bolton scribed on Ivanoff’s receipts, Ivanoff’s donations are fully tax deductible. In fact and reality, they’re not.

Richard E. “Rick” Dennis CPP, Risk Manager & Analyst: Risk Manager & Analyst testified last, under oath, as an expert witness for the (Defense). Risk Manager & Analyst testified, not only for Hatfield’s Risk Assessment & Analysis report pertaining to Bolton but also for three preceding Risk Assessment & Analysis Reports formulated by same. For the record, each Risk Assessment & Analysis Report delineates Bolton’s alleged fraudulent activity involving: Randi Collier; Beaumont, Texas, Mindy McMahon; Afton, Wyoming and Lynda Carter; Colorado.

Also, for the record, all four Risk Assessment & Analysis Reports delineates each (Victims) individual sworn oath testimony and affirmation, via Notarized Affidavit, of their individual business dealings with Kathrin Bolton as well as specifying the exact type of alleged fraud and damages each (Victim) sustained due to Bolton’s alleged unscrupulous, fraudulent, and criminal business dealings. More specifically:

1. Randi Collier; owner, SOUL HORSES LLC, Beaumont, Texas reported, to Risk Manager & Analyst, by Sworn Oath Notarized Affidavit, Collier purchased four rescue horses from Frabrizius Live Stock LLC, of Colorado. After purchase, Collier contracted with Kathrin Bolton, for transportation services, for the horses, as well as a thirty (30) day quarantine stay, for each horse, at Bolton’s Colorado facility. Collier further states: Bolton’s charges for the horse transport service as well as the thirty day quarantine stay, for each of Collier’s horses, were paid to Bolton, by Collier, in-full, and in advance.

Collier further reports, swears and affirms, via Notarized Affidavit: Shortly after the arrival, of Collier’s horses, at Bolton’s facility, Bolton notified Collier; one of Collier’s purchased rescue horses was sick and required veterinary medical services. Thereafter, Collier received an electronically transmitted invoice, from Bolton, for veterinary services provided by a Dr. Sagel. Collier requested and never received, from Bolton, Dr. Sagel’s veterinarian medical report pertaining to the alleged sick horse. Furthermore, Collier states: Bolton electronically transmitted, to Collier, from Bolton, two more invoices specifying the euthanasia of the alleged sick horse as well as the burial of same.

Again, Collier requested but never received, from Bolton, the required medical report, from Dr. Sagel, nor did Collier receive a copy of the billing from the excavator operator allegedly hired for the burial of Collier’s allegedly deceased horse. After not receiving the Collier requested medical and burial material, from Bolton, Collier became suspicious of Bolton and hired Risk Manager & Analyst. During the Risk Assessment & Analysis review process, it was discovered Dr. Sagel was a fictitious person and not a licensed veterinarian in the State of Colorado. Collier confronted Bolton about the fraudulent electronically submitted invoice submissions. Collier also requested photographs and a video of Collier’s horses on Bolton’s property. Collier also requested to pickup Collier’s horses from Bolton. Bolton denied Collier access to Bolton’s facility and Collier’s horses, in Bolton’s possession and control, until the fraudulent billing was paid by Collier. Collier never received the horse documentation Collier requested from Bolton.

Therefore, an impasse existed between Collier and Bolton. More specifically, Collier refused to pay Bolton’s extortion demand and summoned the police. The police offered Collier no help. Todate, Collier has never received the horse documentation Collier requested nor has Collier received Collier’s horses back from Bolton. Collier has no idea what happened to the horses.

2. Mindy McMahon, Afton, Wyoming reported to Risk Manager & Analyst, by Sworn Oath Notarized Affidavit, McMahon purchased three horses, from Frabrizius Live Stock LLC, of Colorado. After purchase, McMahon contracted with Bolton for transportation services, for McMahon’s purchased horses, as well as a thirty day quarantine stay, for each horse, at Bolton’s Colorado facility. McMahon further reported, Bolton’s charges for the horse transport as well as the thirty day quarantine stay, for each horse, were paid, in-full, in advance, to Bolton. McMahon further states, swears and affirms, by notarized affidavit, shortly after McMahon’s horses arrived at Bolton’s facility, Bolton electronically transmitted alleged veterinary invoices, to McMahon, for alleged veterinary services rendered to one of McMahon’s allegedly sick horses. The name of the veterinarian is Dr. Sagel. The same fictitious and nonexistent Dr. Sagel named in the Collier case. Risk Manager & Analyst counseled pro bono with McMahon and suggested McMahon contact Randi Collier about the Dr. Sagel saga.

After speaking with Collier, McMahon contacted Bolton; refused to pay Bolton’s fraudulent veterinary billing and requested access to Bolton’s facility for pickup of McMahon’s three horses on Bolton’s property. However, Bolton refused to allow McMahon access to Bolton’s property or McMahon’s horses, in Bolton’s custody and control, until after the fraudulent veterinary billing was paid.

McMahon refused to adhere to Bolton’s extortion demand and contacted law enforcement. Law Enforcement stated to McMahon there was nothing they could do. Todate, McMahon has never received McMahon’s three horses back from Bolton. However, McMahon did list one of the three horses on NET POSSE - STOLEN HORSE INTERNATIONAL. According to McMahon, Kathrin Bolton is listed as the perpetuator of the crime. It should be noted, photographs of McMahon’s other two horses, in Bolton’s custody and control were unsuitable for posting on NET POSSE - STOLEN HORSE INTERNATIONAL.

3. Lynda Carter, of Colorado, reported, by Notarized sworn oath affidavit, the purchase of a pregnant Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Mustang mare from an auction in Tennessee; Point A. The mare was tattooed down the side of her neck signifying the mare was from a (BLM) Mustang roundup. Carter hired Bolton to pickup and haul the pregnant Mustang mare, nonstop, from Point A, to Carter’s Colorado facility; Point B. Carter paid Bolton, in-full, in advance for the horse hauling services even though Bolton was two weeks late in picking up Carter’s purchased pregnant Mustang mare. However, Bolton breached the hauling contract with Carter when Bolton clandestinely diverted the delivery of Carter’s pregnant Mustang mare, from Point B, to Bolton’s Colorado facility. This Bolton diversion was consummated absence of Carter’s knowledge or consent.

Once Bolton gained unlawful access to Carters pregnant Mustang mare, at Bolton’s Colorado facility, Carter started receiving electronically transmitted fraudulent billing from Bolton for unauthorized: Veterinary Services, from a Dr. Wexford, along with farrier services and boarding fees. Carter requested access to Bolton’s facility to pickup the pregnant Mustang mare whereby Bolton denied Carter access to her property and Carter’s pregnant Mustang mare until the unauthorized and fraudulent billing was paid. Thereafter, an impasse existed between Carter and Bolton. For the record both Carter and Risk Manager & Analyst contacted the Colorado Department of Veterinary Medicine and licensing and discovered Dr. Wexford is a fictitious and nonexistent person nor did Dr. Wexford have a veterinary license in the State of Colorado.

It was later determined Bolton used Dr. Wexford in Valerie Hatfield’s fraudulent veterinary billing. When the police became involved Bolton fled Colorado with the pregnant Mustang mare and dumped the mare at Wind Catcher Horse Sanctuary in Oklahoma, absent of shipping and ownership papers as well as Carter’s knowledge or consent and never returned to pickup the mare or provide subsistence of any type or kind thereafter. Years later Carter discovered the mare was at this location and received a sworn oath notarized affidavit, of affirmation, from the owner testifying to the facts of the case, i.e., Bolton arrived at the facility with Carter’s pregnant Mustang mare, in the dead of night, absent of any shipping or ownership papers; promising to mail same as soon as Bolton returned home but Bolton never fulfilled this promise.

Thereafter, Bolton filed an illegal Agistors Lien against Carter. However, it was later verified, the Agistors Lien Bolton filed is illegal in every respect due to the fact: In Colorado, an Agistors Lien isn’t applicable to stolen livestock. Later, Bolton sued Carter for defamation and slander. Carter counter-sued Bolton. Carter won the lawsuit on a Motion for Summary Judgment. For the record, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office sent a letter to Carter acknowledging the fact: Bolton stole Carter’s pregnant Mustang mare and should’ve been arrested, charged and prosecuted for the theft of Carter’s horse. For the record, upon the Plaintiff Attorney, i.e., Bolton’s Attorney receiving Carter’s answer to Bolton’s lawsuit, Bolton’s Attorney quit the case thus leaving Bolton to defend herself in Proper Person or hire another attorney.

At the conclusion of the Valerie Hatfield Risk Assessment & Analysis report, Risk Manager and Analyst suggested Hatfield file a report with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) due to the fact: A myriad alleged violations being reported by the victims herein. Such alleged violations could indicate Bolton may be allegedly committing an ongoing pattern of operating a criminal enterprise. More specifically: Interstate Fraud. This Risk Analysis Conclusion was derived from the sheer volume of alleged criminal violations reported by each individuals sworn oath testimony, via each ones notarized affidavit. For the record, In a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act (RICO) case there’s thirty five (35) predicated violations of the law. An individual must commit two predicate violations within a ten year period.

The alleged Federal target violations, identified in the Risk Management & Analysis cases hereinabove exceeds this requirement and include, but are not limited to, by example only, Obstruction of Justice, Evidence Tampering, Wire Fraud, Interstate Transportation of Stolen Property, Theft of Interstate Goods - Horses, and Interstate Fraud, et al. Thereafter, Risk Manager & Analyst referred the four cases to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for their review and action; where warranted and necessary. For the record, only a law enforcement agency can charge Kathrin Bolton with a criminal act.

“Until Next Time, Keep Em Between The Bridle!”

October 30th, 2025

https://www.richardedennis.net/blog/october-30th-2025

https://www.richardedennis.net/blog/october-30th-2025#comments

Uncategorized

KATHRIN BOLTON FOUND GUILTYBy Richard E. “Rick” Dennis CPPFreelance Writer and AuthorOctober 30, 2025Copyright, All Rights ReservedCONVICTED OF TWO FELONIESIn an October 20, 2025 news article, the MCCURTAIN GAZETTE NEWS reports: A seven-man, five-women jury deliberated for about two hours Thursday before finding the former head of a horse sanctuary guilty of animal cruelty. Over-the-years, I’ve used a litany of calibers to harvest big game, e.g., 22 250 Remington, 243 Winchester, 25 06 Remington, 257 Ackley Improved, 257 Weatherby Magnum, 6.5 Creedmoor, 270 Winchester, 270 Weatherby Magnum, 270 Winchester WSM, 284 Winchester, 280 Ackley Improved, 7MM Shooting Times Westerner, 7MM Remington Magnum, 308 Winchester, 30 06 Springfield, 300 Winchester Magnum, and 340 Weatherby Magnum. With the correct projectile, shot placement, and a reasonable shooting distance every caliber mentioned can dispatch the intended target.

However, some big game calibers impact results were better than others and some big game calibers were outright disappointing. However, the magnum calibers came with a price for success, e.g., heavy to extremely heavy recoil, i.e, measurable foot ponds of energy (FPE) on the shooters shoulder. While some calibers produced spectacular instant knock downs, others resulted in long tracking jobs, even with perfect shot placement. Some recoil sensitive shooters, may find the magnum calibers to intimidating or to much gun to be used effectively. While others, like myself, aren’t affected by recoil and shoot them just fine.

Notwithstanding, the main concern with heavy recoiling calibers is: “Will the shooter be as effective with a heavy recoiling caliber as the shooter would be with a lesser recoiling caliber?” Big boomers are fine if you can handle the recoil at all shooting positions one may encounter in the field, e.g., standing, kneeling, prone, and sitting but it’s not if you can’t.

PERSONAL FIELD TESTING

After analyzing my 50 plus years of big game hunting experience; on the North American Continent, I decided it was time to abandon my hard kicking magnum calibers and search for a lighter rifle and a lesser recoiling cartridge capable of dispatching my big game choices, at distances ranging from 0 - 400 yards, with moderate recoil, i.e., 11 - 13 foot pounds of free recoil, and chambered in a light rifle. The final requirement: The cartridge had to be capable of firing a 140 grain bullet at a muzzle velocity between 2,700 and 2,800 feet per second.

Due to its outstanding ballistic coefficient, sectional density, defying wind drift attribute, and energy retaining capability at long range I decided on the .264 caliber. Back in the late 90’s there were only a few 6.5 calibers on the market. The .264 Winchester magnum, the 260 Remington, and the 6.5 X 55 Swedish. However, I didn’t want a magnum and the ammunition supply for the other two weren’t readily available.

So it was, HORNADY introduced the 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge. Soon after it’s introduction, I purchased a rifle chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor with a 22 inch barrel along with purchasing boxes of different types of HORNADY Ammunition. Actually, HORNADY ammunition loaded with with the excellent Interlock bullets were my preferred choice for most of my big game hunting using the excellent Weatherby Mark 5 rifles. After many years in the field, I have complete confidence, not only in HORNADY ammunition but also in the Weatherby rifles.

On the bench the 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge was everything I’d ever wanted in a hunting cartridge. It was extremely accurate, capable of firing a 140 grain bullet at an advertised muzzle velocity of 2,700 feet per second with moderate recoil. Comparison: The 243 Winchester produces approximately 11 foot pounds of free recoil with a 100 grain bullet and the 6.5 Creedmoor produces, on average, around13 foot pounds of free recoil with 120 to 140 grain bullets. That’s of course, each cartridge is being fired from the same weight rifle. Notwithstanding, the 6.5 Creedmoor produces between 25 and 30 percent less recoil than the 308 Winchester.

Today, my hunting rifle is a Franchi Momentum bolt action rifle with a 24 inch barrel chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor and topped with a Leopold 3 X 9 CDS scope. The rifle shoots 5/8 inch 100 yard groups right out of the box with HORNADY ammunition. With this rifle and scope combination; combined with a laser range finder, I can easily hit a 10 inch steel plate from 0 - 600 yards with just a twist of the scope dial.

Over-the-years, I’ve read a lot of good and bad press concerning the 6.5 Creedmoor, but my personal experience with the cartridge hasn’t been anything but spectacular. To date, every big game animal (Whitetail Deer) I’ve harvested with the 6.5 Creedmoor hasn’t taken another step from where the animal was shot. The farthest shot I’ve taken with the 6.5 Creedmoor was a measured 210 yards. However, in the South, my average shots are under 100 yards. If the occasion arouse, I wouldn’t hesitate shooting Mule Deer or Elk with the 6.5 Creedmoor out West?

After personally witnessing the immediate demise of the Whitetail Deer I’ve harvested with the 6.5 Creedmoor I wouldn’t hesitate loading up my rifle with a good HORNADY solid Copper bullet or an excellent 143 ELD X and heading to the big game hunting fields of North America on another big game hunting adventure. CBS News reports:

A drug trafficking investigation in Bogalusa, Louisiana, has led to the arrest of the city's mayor, Tyrin Truong, and several other people, police said Tuesday.

The Louisiana State Police Narcotics/Violent Crime Task Force began a "comprehensive investigation" into a drug trafficking organization operating in the area in April 2024. Louisiana saw 2,456 drug-involved deaths in 2023, according to state health officials.

The joint task force operation found the organization was distributing various drugs, including opioids, high-grade marijuana, THC products and MDMA. The operation was using social media to distribute drugs and manage payments, officials said. The profits from the drug sales were used to purchase firearms, officials said, and some of those firearms were then funneled to individuals who have been banned from owning them. Some firearms have been linked to violent crimes in the area, police said.

The investigation resulted in the issuance of seven arrest warrants, including for Truong, 25. Truong, who became the city's youngest mayor after he surprisingly defeated incumbent mayor Wendy Perrette in 2022, is facing charges of transactions involving proceeds from drug offenses, unauthorized use of a moveable and soliciting for prostitutes.

The other six people all face charges of transactions involving proceeds from drug offenses. Three of them face charges of conspiracy to distribute a Schedule I controlled substance. Another faces an additional charge of distribution of a Schedule II controlled substance. However, if you found yourself in a catastrophic situation and you were limited to one gun and one caliber or gauge choice, to perform multiple tasks, e.g., from survival to self and home defense, which firearm would you choose and what caliber or gauge would you select to perform a myriad tasks? For clarification, caliber choices are restricted to hand guns and rifles and gauges are restricted to shotguns.

Bear-in-mind, the firearm type, whether rifle, shotgun, or pistol as well as the action type, e.g., semi-auto, single shot, pump, double barrel, over and under, single action, or double action and caliber or gauge is a matter of personal choice. However, the firearm and caliber or gauge must be capable of performing double duty from survival, i.e, hunting small and large game, for food consumption, to home and self defense purposes. Another criteria, for consideration, is the bulk storage of ammunition.

WHICH CALIBER OR GAUGE?

For instance, handguns come in a variety of design types, styles, e.g., double action or single action semi auto pistols, double or single action action revolvers, single shot, and bolt action. Handguns are chambered in both centerfire and rimfire cartridges. Centerfire cartridges use a primer seated in the center of the cartridge case to ignite the powder and rimfire cartridges use a powder ignition system located in the rim of the cartridge case. Caliber choices range from the venerable 22 caliber rimfire to the powerful center fire caliber cartridges. Furthermore, handguns are also chambered in centerfire rifle cartridges, e.g., 243 Winchester, 30 30 Winchester, and 7mm 08 Remington. Handguns are manufactured with fixed sights, adjustable sights, and some can be affixed with telescopic and red dot sights. But is a handgun the ideal choice for the one gun survival tool by itself?

Long guns are divided into two groups, Rifles and Shotguns. Rifles come in a variety of action types, e.g.,: semi auto, pump, single shot, and bolt action. Rifles come with fixed sights or the ability to mount a telescopic sight. Rifles come chambered in a large variety of rifle calibers, from the 17 caliber to the might dangerous game calibers used on the Savannah’s of Africa. On the other hand, shotguns are manufactured in a variety of action types, e.g., semi auto, pump, single shot or break open action, double and single barrel designs. Shotguns are chambered in either the 410, 28, 20, 16, or 12 gauges. Unlike the rifle which fires a single projectile, the shotgun is capable of firing a mixed bag of shotgun shell ammunition, e.g., lead and steel pelleted shot shells, including buckshot, to rifled slugs. But is the rifle or shotgun the ideal choice for the one gun survival tool by itself?

MY PERSONAL CHOICE FOR ONE GUN SURVIVAL AND THE REASONS WHY!

Overall, if I were limited to a one gun survival battery I would choose a light semi-auto rifle, in either a traditional or take-down model, chambered in the time tested 22 Long Rifle chambering or the 22 Winchester Magnum. With either one of these rifle chambering’s, chambered in a rifle with both fixed and a 3 X 9 X 40 telescopic sight, I would be able to adequately defend myself and my family against wild animals or human aggressors as well as hunt game animals and birds for survival. Unlike the more powerful centerfire cartridges, in the shotgun, rifle, or pistol cartridge line-up, a 22 caliber hollow point or soft nose cartridge possesses sufficient power, within its range limitations, to dispatch small game animals such as rabbits and squirrels but it can also dispatch larger game animals such as deer and hogs with a well placed shot. In addition to mammals, the venerable 22 caliber cartridges performs an excellent job on game birds such as grouse, quail, turkeys, ducks and geese without excessive meat destruction when compared to the shotgun, high powered rifle or centerfire pistol cartridges. Bear in mind, under normal conditions it’s illegal to take certain game animals and birds with a 22 rimfire rifle. However, this article refers to a collapse of society under catastrophic conditions!

With either the 22 Long Rifle or 22 Winchester Magnum cartridge, thousands of rounds of bulk ammunition can be purchased at nominal prices and stored compared to the high costs and bulk associated with shotgun, centerfire rifle, or pistol ammunition. Furthermore, the user can put a hundred rounds of 22 ammunition in a jacket pocket and the weight is negligible. With the 22 Long Rifle Cartridge I would limit my shots to 75 yards or less and with the 22 Winchester Magnum my shots could easily be extended to 100 yards and beyond. With a take-down model 22 caliber rifle, the entire survival tool can be disassembled and placed in a back pack for easy transport along with an adequate supply of ammunition. If adequate records were readily available, it would probably be safe to say the 22 Long Rifle and the 22 Winchester Magnum cartridges have dispatched more game animals on the North American continent than any other calibers.

“UNTIL NEXT TIME, KEEP EM BETWEEN THE BRIDLE”

K-9 Training 101, Part 4

https://www.richardedennis.net/blog/k-9-training-101-part-4

https://www.richardedennis.net/blog/k-9-training-101-part-4#comments

Uncategorized

K-9 Training 101, Part 4 By Richard E. “Rick” Dennis CPPFreelance Journalist & AuthorCopyright 2024 All-rights ReservedMay 4, 2024DO’s and Don’ts of K-9 TrainingIn K-9 training observations, the three most-often reoccurring mistakes, I witness are: 1)Starting a young dog to soon and expecting too much out of the young pup, 2) using abusive tactics to “force-train” a dog, at any age, but especially during its early developmental stage, instead of using patience [...]

K-9 Training 101, Part 4

By Richard E. “Rick” Dennis CPP
Freelance Journalist & Author
Copyright 2024 All-rights Reserved
May 4, 2024

DO’s and Don’ts of K-9 Training

In K-9 training observations, the three most-often reoccurring mistakes, I witness are: 1)Starting a young dog to soon and expecting too much out of the young pup, 2) using abusive tactics to “force-train” a dog, at any age, but especially during its early developmental stage, instead of using patience and repetitive common sense training practices throughout the training regime, 3) not spending enough quality time with the K-9 prior to initiating training, to gain the love, respect, confidence, and trust of the K-9 companion.

Starting a K-9 To Soon

The novice trainer should learn, a K-9’s top intelligence level, at maturity, is comparable to that of a five or six year old human child. Therefore, before the novice trainer should begin attempting to train his or her new K-9 companion the key elements to successful training is “Patience, Repetition, and Praise.” As the “old adage,” in animal training goes, “If you punish an animal every time it does something wrong, it will quit trying to do it right!”

The correct philosophy to use when training an animal, whether a dog a horse, or any animal or bird is to turn a negative into a positive. More specifically, if the novice trainer is trying teach the K-9 to walk beside, him or her, and the K-9 keeps bolting ahead the trainer should stop the training exercise, bring the K-9 back to the trainer, and repeat the process over and over, as many times as it takes, for the K-9 to understand, the running off isn’t the correct behavior, but the walking beside the trainer is. Training an animal is a game of patience. If you don’t have the patience don’t undertake the training process. Be completely honest with yourself.

Using Abusive Training Tactics

Never ever use abusive training tactics with your K-9. This illogical behavior only serves to instill fear and distrust, in the K-9, towards the K-9’s owner instead of respect, confidence, trust, and love. The former will completely ruin a good K-9, while the latter will produce a willing working partner for the rest of its life. Therefore, NEVER: Strike, Hit, Kick, Slap, or Punch your K-9 or act aggressive, in any manner, towards the K-9 when it’s doing something wrong. Instead show the K-9 what is right!

These illogical training tactics only serve to instill fear in a K-9 and teaches the abused K-9 to be rebellious and cower as well as in some instances, depending on the breed, these abusive tactics, “only serve,” to make the K-9 aggressive. Example: “As another old training adage goes, “you can take the most docile K-9 in the world and put it in a corner. If every time the owner passes the K-9, he or she kicks it, one day the abused K-9 will come out of the corner and eat the owner up.” The K-9 will get the blame, but the owner’s at fault, and the K-9 will usually be euthanized.”

Using Shock Collars

Over the course of my fifty four (54) years as a professional K-9 trainer, I’ve trained a myriad K-9’s, for diverse assignments, e.g., Police K-9’s for general duty police work to include, but not limited to, tracking, bite work, search and rescue, criminal apprehension, crowd control, narcotics. and explosive detection. It’s also been my pleasure to train sporting dogs. More specifically, retrievers for waterfowl hunting and birds dogs for upland hunting. During my tenure, I’v e never employed the use of a shock collar in my training regiment. Oh I’m sure there’s some logic to this training methodology, but I’ve never realized the need for it.

Not Spending Enough Quality Time With The K-9

Through time and memory, dogs were bred to be mans best friend. Whether that K-9 friend’s purpose is law enforcement or war time applications, guarding a flock of sheep or a persons property and assets, or whether the K-9 was bred for sporting purposes, i.e., a hunting companion, pulling a cart, or a general everyday companion. Over the course of time, the faithful K-9, has done it all.

It’s also been said, “that no matter how your day is going or what mood your in, the K-9 is always happy to see it’s owner.” Now that’s true love. Therefore, doesn’t the faithful K-9 deserve the same type of love and devotion in return? Of course they do! The sole purpose of this quality time, spent together, is to form a lifelong bond between the owner and the K-9. As with any relationship, without love, trust, and devotion the relationship doesn’t really exist!

One of the questions I’m most often asked, is: “Do I allow my K-9 companions to sleep in the bed with me?” My answers are simple. “If I’m In bed by myself, the answer is yes.” “If I’m in bed with a female companion, the answer is no.” However, when I’m with a female companion, in mixed companyI do teach the K-9 to sleep on the floor, by the bed on a dog bed or pallet. One way or the other, the K-9 is always in the bedroom with me where it belongs.”

“Until Next Time, Keep Em Between The Bridle!
